Financial Benefits of University of Otago Scholarships 2023

The following components of a doctoral and research master’s scholarship for the duration of the scholarship are included:

  • A fee waiver for tuition is provided
  • Students studying in New Zealand on campus or via distance education in New Zealand will receive a monthly living allowance paid in equal monthly installments during the duration of the scholarship.
  • Scholarships provided by the University of Otago for doctoral students not covered by other scholarships. Scholarships are currently valued at $28,600 each per year and are available for doctoral students.

Eligibility Criteria

Scholarships will be awarded for doctoral and master’s programs based on the following criteria:

  • Academic achievements of the applicant
  • Proficiency certificate
  • The applicant’s research record or potential for conducting research.
  • Recommendations and/or rankings of the Heads of Department which are relevant to the applicant’s plans.
  • The scholarship is open to all international candidates working towards a doctoral degree in any discipline. Scholarship recipients will be required to waive their tuition fees if awarded a scholarship
  • Applicants for a doctoral scholarship are required to have their applications for admission to the relevant doctoral programme approved and to have completed the enrollment procedure before they can be confirmed as recipients of the scholarship.
  • The confirmation of a Master’s scholarship is dependent on the approval of the applicant’s application to register as a Master’s student and completion of the enrollment process.
  • Scholarships for doctoral or master’s degrees may be awarded with tenure over a full-time or part-time basis. The provision of part-time tenure is only permitted in cases where the possibility of full-time study is not practicable.
  • The candidate must conduct research during their tenure of the scholarship in Dunedin or at the University of Otago, Christchurch or University of Otago, Wellington.
  • The duration of a doctoral scholarship is three full-time years
  • The duration of a Master’s scholarship is one full-time year.
